Gulmarg Avalanche: Missing Swedish skier buried in snow rescued

Police teams successfully rescued missing Swedish skier Benjamin who was trapped under the avalanche. Earlier, a Swedish skier was killed in an avalanche on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg ski resort, while his compatriot was termed missing.

Police said that two Swedish skiers got trapped under an avalanche in Affarwat peaks of Gulmarg in Baramulla district.

“One skier, identified as Daniel from Sweden, has died while police teams successfully rescued another Swedish skier named Benjamin who was also trapped under the avalanche,” police said.

It was not immediately known how the Swedish skiers were allowed to undertake the adventure when an avalanche warning was in force, officials said.

Earlier, the Additional Commissioner Kashmir, had issued an avalanche warning for areas of Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts of Kashmir division.

The warning was valid from 1700 hrs January 17, to 1700 hrs January 18.

While all concerned Deputy Commissioners had been asked to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident, the general public had been appealed not to venture in the said areas during the period.
