Shocker: Dead baby, covered in mud, found lying in Srinagar, police registers FIR

Srinagar: On Friday, a picture of a newborn baby, lying on a wet muddy road went viral across the feed of social media users in Kashmir.

The photo of the lifeless baby was said to be found near a washroom in Srinagar’s Downtown area near Gunj Baksh Public Park, Nowhatta. The post claimed that it was found by the locals who then informed the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Speaking to Free Press Kashmir about the incident, Wasim Jehangir, Station House Officer, Nowhatta Police Station said, “At around 8.30 in the morning we got a call that a baby has been found lying on the road there. I immediately sent my police party to the location and got the custody of the baby.”

Revealing the gender of the baby, he said that it was a boy, who was born on Thursday night, and ‘couldn’t see the light of the Friday morning’ when the police reached the spot.

“He was taken to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Hospital, Rainawari where the doctors told us that he had died about 2-4 hours ago,” said Jehangir adding that an FIR No. 5/2018 under section 318 CRPC has been registered.

“Here (Nowhatta) we have an Auqaf Masjid near us. We spoke to the authorities there who buried him in Malkhah graveyard,” Jehangir informed.

“Abandoned babies have been mostly found near hospitals like Lal Ded or JVC. This the first time it happened here in the middle of the city. We could not trace out who the parents are but we have started the investigation and will try our best to reach to a conclusion,” he said.
