Geelani free to offer Friday prayers after eight years, asks people to ‘stay dedicated to cause’

Asks youth to follow Quraan, Sunnat and teachings of Iqbal

Sehrai says, ‘my son is educated and mature, why should I ask him to come back’

Hurriyat Chairman and senior resistance leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday, offered prayers at Jamia Masjid, Hyderpora after being house arrested by the government for eight years. He was accompanied by Hurriyat activists, including his recently announced successor of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai.

Geelani spoke after regular Friday sermon by the Khateeb were finished. Addressing the people he said, “I appeal to everyone, particularly to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, to follow the teachings of Quraan and Sunnat. I also advice them to take teachings from Iqbal’s poetry. I also request them not to lose hope and stay dedicated to the cause.”

He also reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir ‘is a disputed territory’ and the issue was taken to the United Nations by India, after which the people of the state were promised the chance of deciding their future.

After the news spread that Geelani would be speaking at Jamia Masjid, scores of people reached the place, and those who couldn’t make it inside the mosque, stayed in the Eid-Gah ground to listen to Geelani.

Commenting on Police Chief, S P Vaid’s statement that all three Joint Resistance leaders are free, Geelani said, “Joint Resistance Leadership will respond to the statement within the coming three days. Meanwhile people should maintain calm and be patient, as Allah is with you.”

After finishing the prayers, youth raised Pro-Freedom and Pro-Pakistan slogans outside the mosque. The names of Junaid Sehrai, Ashraf Sehrai’s son, and Zakir Musa, were also used in slogans.

An announcement from the mosque had to be made for people to maintain calm and control their emotions, following which, Geelani moved while waving to the youth who formed a human chain around him.

At the Tehreek e Hurriyat office at Hyderpora, newly appointed Chairman Ashraf Sehrai while talking to the media thanked the youth for the love and affection shown by them.

Answering a question about his son Junaid, joining the militancy Sehrai said, “Why should I ask my son to return home and give up militancy. He is an educated and a matured man, who has chosen his way. My son is no special than others who have chosen this way.”
