Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani today offered congregational Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid Hyderpora for the first time after 2010, an eye witness said.

Geelani along with his lieutenant Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai and other aides left his Hyderpora residence at around 1 pm for the prayers. Earlier, the amalgam’s spokesperson had confirmed that Geelani would offer Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid Hyderpora.

Geelani has been under house confinement for the past eight years and he wasn’t allowed to offer Friday prayers in the masjid since then.

The development comes a day after director general of police S P Vaid said that Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik were free to go anywhere they wish to. He, however, said the trio should not make “anti-national” speeches or create a law and order problem.

S. P. Vaid, the head of the state police, had said Syed Ali Geelani, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the three leaders of Joint Resistance Leadership, are “free to carry out their political and social activities.

“But they have to take the responsibility of not creating any law and order problem. They have to also refrain from making anti-national speeches,” he said.

Recently, all three, after a long time were allowed to meet at Geelani’s residence where they discussed the current situation in the valley.

Many a times, all three of them have not been allowed to hold press conferences, meetings or seminars however, lately the government has shown signs of easing curbs over the Resistance leaders.
