Shopian gunfights aftermath: Two civilians killed, over a 100 injured

Srinagar: In the clashes which erupted near the two gun fight sites Dragad and Kachdoora in Shopian, two civilians have been killed and over 100 civilians have been injured.

In a bid to help militants escape the cordon, youth marched towards the gunfight sites. To disperse the protesters, armed forces used live ammunition, pellet guns and tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters, triggering massive clashes which left two civilians dead and over 100 injured.

An official told the Greater Kashmir that at least 50 civilians were brought to District Hospital Shopian for treatment. “20 of them were referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment,” he said.

Over thirty injured were brought to District Hospital Kulgam. “22 were referred to Srinagar while majority of them were hit by bullets,” said an official.

At least four injured were shifted to District Hospital Anantnag for treatment. Local sources said that many injured were shifted to local health centres for treatment.

The deceased civilians were identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Padroo and Zubair Ahmad Bhat.

At least 34 civilians have been admitted in the SMHS hospital with pellets injuries, reported the Rising Kashmir. 

According to the report, two civilians have sustained pellet injuries in both eyes.

Eleven militants were killed in the twin operations at Dragad and Kachdor. Seven militants were killed in Dragad, and three killed in Kachdor where the forces blasted the house to kill the remaining militants when reports last came.

One militant Rouf Bashir Khanday was killed and his associate Imran Rashid was arrested during an overnight gunfight at Brunty Dialgam in Anantnag district.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik on Sunday called for a Kashmir-wide shutdown. The Shutdown call is for Sunday and Monday.

Police sources in Srinagar and Shopian have identified the killed militants as Yawar Itoo, a resident Safnagri Zainpora, Nazim Nazir of Nagbal, Adil Thokar of Homhona, Ubair Shafi Malla, a resident of Trenz, Rais Thokar of Paderpora, Ishafaq Malik of Pinjoora and Zubair Turay of Shopian town.
