Srinagar: The gunfight between militants and government forces that began Tuesday morning ended with the killing of four militants and two armed forces’ personnel. Two soldiers were injured in the firefight.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Awantipora, Muhammad Zahid informed Kashmir News Service (KNS) that four Jaish militants include top commander, Omar Khalid who had replaced Mufti Waqas.

Mufti Waqas, was killed in March in a joint operation of the Army, the Jammu and Kashmir police and the CRPF in the Awantipora area of South Kashmir. According to the Army, Waqas had plotted the attack on the Sunjuwan camp in Jammu on February 11 in which six armed forces personnel were killed.

The others have been identified as Ashfaq Ahmad Khan, Yasir, a foreigner who was the area commander of Tral, and Abid Maqbool, a local who had joined militancy around 50 days back.

Saying that the operation at Tral, carried out jointly by police, 48 RR and CRPF, was very difficult, the SSP added that the two among the slain militants were very important.

“The operation started at around 6:30 and concluded at around 05:00 pm,” he informed, adding that the bodies of the militants have been retrieved.

Earlier, Police said that a cop identified as Latif Gojri, and an Army trooper identified as Ajay Kumar, were also killed in the gunfight.

“We pay out tribute to policeman Latif Gojri whom we lost today at Tral. We stand by with the family of our martyr who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty,” Kashmir zone police tweeted.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Swayam Prakash Pani also paid floral tributes to the slain cop at DPL Awantipora.

“Wreath laying ceremony of police official Latif Gojri held at DPL Awantipora ….. Floral tributes paid to the Martyr,” police tweeted.
