Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case of rash-driving against the CRPF for mowing down a youth during protests in Nowhatta area of Downtown Srinagar on Friday and a case of rioting has also been registered against the protesters.

“We have lodged two cases with regard to the incidents and further investigations have been taken up,” SSP said.

Kaiser Bhat, 21, was ploughed down by the Central Reserve Police Force vehicle in the old city area of Nowhatta during protests on Friday. Bhat was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), here. He succumbed to critical internal injuries early on Saturday.

Tear gas shells were fired at his funeral at Fateh Kadal Chowk on Saturday in which dozens have been injured.

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while reacting to the incident asked Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti that is crushing protesters to death her new SOP.

The deceased youth is survived by two teenage sisters. The family was living with their aunt in Dalgate for the past four years after both his parents had died.

One of the other injured youth identified as Mohammad Younis, as per doctors, has polytrauma. “When we received him at SKIMS hospital, he is intubated. We are monitoring his condition but he is very critical,” said an official from the hospital.

According to a report in Greater Kashmir, CRPF spokesman in Srinagar Sanjay Sharma said a group of over 500 protesters surrounded the CRPF vehicle that was ferrying a senior officer. The officer, according to Sharma, was supposed to check the deployment in the area.

The incident comes days after civilian Adil Ahmed Yadoo was mowed down by a police armoured vehicle on May 5, during protests in Safa Kadal, Srinagar.

The images of the boys being overrun by the CRPF vehicle went viral on social media, evoking sharp reactions with many mocking at the ‘truce plan’ offered by the police.
