Srinagar: Tens of thousands of people on Monday took part in the last rites of Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Shakoor Ahmad Dar at his native Sopat-Tangpora village in Devsar area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Reports said that around six funerals were held from 8 am to 11: 30 am for the slain at a big ground in the village that could hold over thirty thousand people at a time.

As per reports, at least three militants surfaced during the funeral and offered a gun-salute to their fallen associate.

Dar was killed with his associate of the Lashkar-e-Toiba in a gunfight in the Chidder village of Qaimoh tehsil of Kulgam district. In the clashes which ensued near the gunfight sight a civilian identified as Yawar Ahmad Dar of Gassipora, who was critically injured, was declared brought dead at the Anantnag District hospital.

One militant, the police said, was arrested alive.

The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for shutdown in Kashmir against the continuous civilian killings.

A senior Police official told news agency GNS that two militants were killed and third one has surrendered. The police identified one of the slain militant as Shakoor Ahmad, a top commander of LeT from Kulgam.

Ahmed, according to the police was a  A++ category militant.

The police said that as soon as the forces approached the suspected spot, the militants hiding in a residential house opened fire on them. The forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight.

The third militant who has surrendered has been identified as Shakir Ahmad. He had reportedly joined the outfit few months ago.
