A crack in Banihal Tunnel diverts highway traffic through a single tube

Srinagar: Vehicular traffic on Jammu-Srinagar highway—which is the only available surface link between the valley and the world—was diverted through a single tube of Banihal Tunnel on Tuesday, after its other tube developed cracks.

An official at Ramban Traffic Control Room told Free Press Kashmir that rocks hit and damaged the Jammu-Srinagar tube of Jawahar tunnel at Banihal.

“Number of vehicles got stranded between the Banihal and Qazigund sectors and there are chances of more rocks to fall,” the official said.

Operational from past 62 years, the Banihal Tunnel is maintained by Border Road organisation.

The traffic from both sides has now been diverted through Srinagar-Jammu tube.
