Kashmir shuts on Joint Resistance’s call, streets empty as Govt shuts down cellular services

Srinagar: Kashmir woke up to heavily militarized streets on the morning of the Indian Independence Day. The valley is observing a complete shutdown called by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against the Independence Day of India celebrations.

JRL comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had asked people to observe a complete shutdown.

The government jammed cellular networks, while telephone and internet services remained suspended since early morning.

All shops, business establishments remained closed as private and public traffic remained off the roads in Srinagar and other districts of the Valley, when reports last came.

In view of the Independence Day functions armed forces have been deployed in strength through the length and breadth of the Valley.

Barricades have been erected on all roads leading to the main Independence Day parade venue at Sher-e-Kashmir stadium.
