Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the ‘all-weather’ friendship with China was a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Pakistan and China both pledged on Sunday to complete the USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had contacted Khan and expressed his desire to strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership.
“Foreign Minister underscored the significance of the CPEC for the mutual benefit of the people of both countries,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
Wang stated China’s desire to work with the new government. He said the relationship between both of them was a model of friendship. Both the countries promised to promote the construction of the CPEC and push forward the development of bilateral ties.
Pakistan’s new president Arif Alvi said friendship with China is Pakistan’s national policy and over the past more than five decades, Pakistan has always cherished the friendship with China, which is based on mutual benefit and is deeply rooted in the hearts of the two peoples.
Wang pointed how the China-Pakistan relationship remained unchanged and said that the purpose of his visit was to get in touch with the new government.
“The Prime Minister reiterated that the government is committed to the implementation of the CPEC,” according to the statement.
Earlier, it was reported that China is building a city for 5 lakh Chinese citizens, as part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) at $150 million in Gwadar, in an attempt to create the first Chinese city in South Asia, Economic Timesreported. The citizens will be housed in the city by 2022.
The citizens will be part of the financial district’s workforce- a plan being set up by Beijing in in the Pakistani port city of Gwadar. Only Chinese citizens will be allowed to live in the zone.
ET has reported that the China-Pak Investment Corporation bought the 3.6-million square foot International Port City and will build a $150-million gated community for the anticipated 5,00,000 Chinese professionals who will be located by 2022 and work in its proposed new financial district in Gwadar.
