Two village guards killed in explosion in southeastern Turkey

An improvised explosive device reportedly having been planted by Kurdish rebels killed two government-paid village guards, according to state-run Turkish news agency, Anadolu, AP reported.

Two other village guards were wounded in the explosion in the mainly Kurdish-populated Sirnak province, near the border with Iraq, Anadolu was quoted by AP.

An operation had been launched to catch the rebels.

The village guards had been supporting the Turkish military against Kurdish rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party. The rebels have been active on their insurgency in the southeastern region.

The group has been named as a terror organization by Turkey.
