Manan Wani’s death ‘entirely our loss’, says ex-CM Mehbooba Mufti

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti, while restating for a peaceful dialogue with all stakeholders including Pakistan, expressed grief over the death of scholar-turned-militant Manan Wani via Twitter.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for shutdown on Friday over the killing of scholar-turned-militant Manan Wani in a gunfight with the armed forces in Kupwara district.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Chairman of the Hurriyat (M) in a tweet said that Kashmir has lost a ‘budding intellectual’. He tweeted: “Alas! heard the tragic news of ’s Martyrdom and of his associates! Deeply pained that we lost a budding intellectual and writer like him,fighting for the of cause of self-determination.JRL appeals to people to observe a complete tomorrow to pay homage to him.”

Earlier, news agency GNS reported that one of the two militants who were killed in a gunfight with armed forces in Shatgund village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Thursday was identified as scholar-turned-militant, Manan Wani, who was enrolled as a PhD scholar with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and joined militant ranks in January this year.

A police official confirmed the killing of two militants in the gunfight that raged intermittently since 2:30 am in the village following a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO).

The officer said the operation was concluded in the area. Soon after the news about the death of two militants spread, violent clashes erupted in parts of Kupwara and Handwara.

Meanwhile, authorities have closed educational institutions in Kupwara district and suspended class work in educational institutions in parts of the Valley.
