Srinagar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chander Mohan Gupta Thursday was elected as the new mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
While Gupta polled 45 votes, his nearest rival, Vijay Choudhary, an Independent backed by the Congress got 30 votes.
Gupta was a treasurer in JK unit of the BJP. He won in the municipal election from ward number 33 in Jammu West.
Urban local body elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in four phases from October 8 to 16, in which the capital city of Kashmir witnessed a low turnout following boycott by regional mainstream parties of the elections. The BJP won in four south Kashmir districts and mainly procured a lead in Jammu, while the Congress swept across the Valley-wide polls.
The four phases saw a complete shutdown in Srinagar following the Joint Resistance Leadership’s call.
