Air, surface traffic halted after heavy snowfall in Kashmir

Heavy and widespread snowfall that lashed Kashmir valley on Saturday has resulted in snapping air and surface links of valley with the rest of the world.

All morning flights have been cancelled at the Srinagar airport due to heavy snowfall.

Officials at Kashmir Meteorological Department said that more snow is expected during the next 24 hours till Sunday morning after which the weather would improve.

The Srinagar-Jammu Highway, the Mughal Road, the Srinagar-Leh Highway and mountain passes leading to Gurez and Tangdhar have been closed due to heavy snowfall.

The higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, the Pir Panjal mountains and Pahalgam received heavy snowfall.

Electric supply in the urban and rural areas was disrupted because of the snowfall.
