Two former members of the JNU unit of the ABVP (BJP’s student wing) have said that it were ABVP members who raised ‘Pakistan Zindabaad’ slogans during a protest in the university in 2016.

Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, former JNU ABVP unit vice-president Jatin Goraiya and former joint-secretary Pradeep Narwal said that students present in a video shown by a news channel allegedly raising the slogan of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ were actually ABVP sympathisers.

While speaking to Janta Ka Reporter, Goraiya said that he can identify the ones who raised the slogans and is also ready to debate with ZEE news, which had claimed that it was Kanhaiya Kumar, the then JNUSU President who raised the slogans.

“You watch the videos broadcast by Zee News on its DNA programme. There are four videos there. You should watch the fourth video, which was found to be authentic in the lab. Perhaps Zee News doesn’t know that all those standing in the video and chanting Pakistan Zindabad slogans are ABVP members,” he said.

Both Goraiya and Narwal had left the ABVP in 2016. Goraiya in particular had said that he was ‘tired’ of ABVP’s stand on the attacks against Dalits. He was the fourth such member of the BJP’s student wing, who resigned from the party the same year.

Delhi police on Monday filed a 1200 page chargesheet in the 2016 JNU Sedition case in which seven Kashmiris have also been named.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti questioned the timing of filing of charge sheet and said that Kashmiris are being used to score political points ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) while condemned the charge-sheet against seven Kashmiri students in the 2016 sedition case said that for electoral gains, New Delhi is playing vindictive politics.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal also demanded that the sedition law, which is a colonial hangover, should be scrapped as those in power are ‘manipulating’ it.

Former IAS officer Shah Faesal while reacting to the Sedition charges slapped on Kanhaiya Kumar and others in the JNU case, said that it was a travesty of free speech.

In a tweet, Faesal said that the world has moved on and it is time that ‘our governments should also grow up.’
