Kulgam gunfight: One among three killed militants identified, shutdown observed

Srinagar: One among the three militants killed in a gunfight with armed forces in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday has been identified as Rakib Ahmad Sheikh of Shungipora village.

According to reports, the body of Sheikh was handed over to his family today.

Sheikh had joined militant outfit Jaish-e-Muhammad one-and-a-half-year back, reports stated.

The identity of other two militants is being ascertained, said an official.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Kulgam following the killing of the militants.

All shops and other commercial establishments are closed while traffic remains off the roads.

Three JeM militants, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Operations Aman Thakur and an army man were killed in the gunfight in Turigam village of Kulgam yesterday.

Earlier, a joint team of army’s 34 RR, CRPF and SOG launched cordon and search operation in Turigam village.

The cordon was laid in the area following credible inputs about the presence of some three JeM militants in the area .

Clashes occurred near the gunfight site as civilians tried to disrupt the operation against the militants. Armed forces used tear smoke and pellets to disperse the protesters.
