Situation under control at central jail, inmates back in barracks: DC

Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Chowdhary said the situation has been normalised in central jail Srinagar and the inmates are back to the barracks, reported the KNS.

“The situation has been normalised. The power supply is being restored. I am also present here,” the DC said.

Earlier the Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh had said that some inmates instigated others to stop the repair and reinforcement works inside a barrack.

“Others (jail inmates) joined and resorted to some violent acts inside on the jail staff. Also set some place on fire. Fire tenders are on the spot and working,” the DG said, adding that DIG Police Central Kashmir Range, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and SSP Srinagar are on the spot to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, PTI had reported that riots started after rumors spread that some inmates are being shifted from the Kashmir valley to outside jails.
