FACT CHECK: FIR against Masjid Committee for rebuilding destroyed houses is FAKE NEWS!

Srinagar: Donations have started pouring in from people willing to help rebuild the houses of civilians who lost their residences in a gunfight between militants and armed forces in the Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar.

Rumours on social media claimed that an FIR has been lodged by the police against those who are helping the civilians, and that accounts have been frozen.

However, this is a baseless rumour.

Police sources confirmed that there is no truth in the matter.

After over 15 houses were gutted, many social relief organisations who were willing to help, decided that Masjid Intizaamia Committee, a local mosque collective existing in most localities in Kashmir, was best suited for the job.

After the rumour, many potential donors stopped sending any help, as it was alleged that the account has been frozen.

The Masjid Intizaamia Committee confirmed to Free Press Kashmir that the account is fully functional and can accept donations.

The account however does not have FCRA clearance and cannot take foreign contributions.
