India’s Covid-19 tally jumps to 1,98,706 after 8,171 new cases were reported in 24 hours

India’s tally of the Covid-19 cases jumped to 198,706 after 8,171 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, Union health ministry data showed on Tuesday.

India’s Covid-19 tally was just a little over 37,000 a month ago and has jumped more than five times. The number of deaths has also climbed—1,218 people were reported dead on May 2.

The death toll due to the respiratory disease stood at 5,598 after 204 fatalities were reported between Monday and Tuesday morning, according to the health ministry data.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst hit Covid-19 State in India with 70,000 cases and 2,362 fatalities recorded so far, the Union health ministry said.

India has reached the 7th spot in terms of 10 worst affected nations across the world, the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Centre revealed.

According to the Union Ministry data, 95,526 people have been cured putting the recovery rate at 48.07% from 48.18% on Monday, reported Hindustan Times. 

The Union Home Ministry data has recorded a sudden spike in Coronavirus cases after the government of India started to ease the lockdown restrictions in the country.
