Congress stands for restoration of full statehood, seeks safeguards for land and jobs for locals: G A Mir

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress committee has said that it stands for the struggle to safeguard the “genuine rights” of the people and the lost identity of the erstwhile state.

In a statement, JKPCC Chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir, has said that party had sought the status quo to be maintained along with other like-minded parties in the state, on the issue of special status, on August 4, 2019, in the wake of apprehensions of some unique and unilateral actions of the Government of India (GoI).

Those actions, according to Mir, came out to be true when the GoI resorted to “undemocratic and arbitrary exercise of power” thus disbanding, dividing and downgrading of the historical state into UTs while abrogating the special status of the state in an “unconstitutional manner,” followed by lockdown and unprecedented restrictions on all the mainstream leaders.

The Congress party vehemently opposed the “unilateral and arbitrary” moves of the GoI both in the parliament and outside and consistently opposed its “undemocratic and authoritarian” actions that followed post-August 5 decisions, the statement said.

Mir said that his party has time and again reiterated its demand for restoration of full statehood status with constitutional guarantees and safeguards for the land and jobs to the local residents of JK with full support to the demand of protecting their rights by the people of Ladakh region under schedule sixth of the constitution.

The entire top brass of the party shall meet shortly to take a review of the whole situation post-Aug 5, last year and take the appropriate decisions to intensify its struggle on all issues taking into account the sentiments of the majority of the people in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, Mir said in a statement.
