United States first country worldwide to report more than 10 million COVID infections

The United States has become the first country worldwide to report more than 10 million COVID-19 infections, according the Reuters news agency. The development on Sunday came as global coronavirus cases exceeded 50 million.

In the past 10 days, the United states has reported about a million cases, the highest rate of infections since the nation reported its first novel coronavirus case in Washington state 293 days ago.

A record 1,31,420 COVID cases were lodged on Saturday and the daily count has crossed 1,00,000 four times in the past seven days, according to Reuters’ data.

The US’s latest report showed a seven-day average of 1,05,600 daily cases, which had accumulated steadily by at least 29 percent, was more than the combined average for India and France, two of the worst-affected countries in Asia and Europe.

More than 2,37,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 since the illness caused by the coronavirus first emerged in China last year.

The number of reported deaths nationwide grew by more than 1,000 for a fifth consecutive day on Saturday, a trend last seen in mid-August, according to Reuters.

Most of the cases in the last seven days in the US were reported from Illinois, with over 60,000 new infections. Texas continues to be the state with the highest number of cases, having crossed the 1 million mark.

The state has about 10 per cent of the total cases in the US.
