JK Admin to constitute committee for ‘revival of economic condition of private educational institutions’

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has order to constitute a committee for the revival of economic condition of straitened private educational institutions of the valley.

This has come up after the delegation of Private School Association has given representation to the LG Manoj Sinha, Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary School Education to “provide interim relief to unaided private schools”.

The two consecutive lockdowns in the valley, first after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, and later in March 2020 after the outbreak of novel coronavirus, has affected the economy of these institutions badly as the academic activities in all the institutions across the valley remained suspended.

However, the Admin on Thursday ordered to constitute a four member committee which will “examine the difficulties faced by the private schools of the valley”.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee for examining detailed problems that are being confronted by the private educational institution in the UT of JK on the account of suspension of academic activities owing to the COVID-19 restrictions,” the government order reads.

The four member committee include Advisor in-charge, School and Higher Education Department as its Chairperson and Administrative Secretary, School Education Department, Administrative Secretary, Higher Education Department and Representative of Finance Department (not below the rank of additional secretary to government) as its members.

“The committee shall be serviced by the school education department and shall make appropriate recommendations in the matter within a period of 15 days,” the official order says.

President Private School Association, G N Var told Free Press Kashmir that they the order has come up after they have given a representation to the JK government.

“Like Sikkim, we also want that government should provide interim relief to the economically weak institutions. Most of the institutions are running on loan and students are not able to pay their fee and institutions are not able to pay their staff. The private sector is collapsing. More than 200 private schools are on sale because they are running in loss,” said Var.

He added that they are hopeful that the admin will help in revival of these institutions.
