Kashmir receives heavy snowfall, major roads and highways closed

Srinagar: The strategic 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway was closed for traffic after fresh snowfall along the Zojila Pass.

An official said that the traffic movement on the highway was suspended as a precautionary measure after the fresh snowfall.

He said it is snowing in upper reaches including health resort Sonamarg and Zojila pass on the highway.

The historic Mughal Road too has been closed for vehicular traffic due to fresh snowfall that started on Monday morning.

“Over one feet of snow has accumulated near Pir Ki Gali, leading to closure of the road,” an official said.

Bandipora-Gurez road has been again closed for traffic, officials said.

The snowfall started Sunday evening as predicted by the weatherman and it has carpeted the Gurez valley.

Light snowfall was witnessed in other hilly areas of this north Kashmir district too as the weather remains inclement in the plains.
