Kanpur: In a shocking turn of events, an armed forces personnel of colonel’s rank in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh allegedly sexually assaulted a Russian woman after inviting her for dinner at the officer’s mess in the city’s Cantt area on December 10, a Delhi-based news organisation Times Now reported.

The incident came to fore after the affected woman’s husband, a civilian, lodged a complaint against the accused army officer identified as Neeraj Gehlot, at the Cantt police station on Saturday (December 12). The complainant stated that his friend Gehlot asked him and his wife, a Russian, to come for dinner at his official residence in Kanpur.

On December 10, the couple reached Kanpur from Lucknow. “After shopping in the day, they went to the Colonel’s official bungalow in Central Ordnance Depot (COD), where the latter offered him a drink laced with sedatives. Soon after consuming it, he was knocked out of his senses,” a report by The Times of India quoted Superintendent of Police (East) Raj Kumar Agarwal as saying.

The army officer then forcibly took the wife of his friend to another room and raped her, the SP said, adding that he also brutally assaulted her when she pushed him and screamed. She then lost consciousness.

Later, the survivor narrated the incident to her husband, who then accompanied her to the police station to file a complaint. Based on the complaint, police have booked the accused under relevant IPC sections, including 376 (rape). Police have formed several teams to apprehend him, the SP stated according to the report.
