Film-makers claimed that Didda ‘defeated Ghaznavi twice’
Ghaznavi raided Kashmir in 1013, Didda died in 1003
Srinagar: Bollywood actress, Kangana Ranaut announced on Thursday that an upcoming project will see her playing the role of a “Brave Kashmiri Queen, Didda who defeated Mahmood Ghaznavi twice.”
“Our nation has witnessed many stories of brave women who have set great precedents. Honored to tell the story of the brave queen of Kashmir who defeated Mehmood Ghaznavi twice with none other than @KanganaTeam. ManikarnikaReturns: The Legend of Didda goes on floors in January 2022,” filmmaker Anil Jain wrote on his Twitter Handle.

However, Free Press Kashmir has found the claim to be historically wrong and misleading.
A senior Historian and Former Professor, Department of History, Kashmir University, Prof. Ashraf Wani told Free Press Kashmir the encounter with Mehmood Ghaznavi never took place during Didda’s reign.
“Didda passed on her dynasty to her nephew, as a result of which, a new dynasty known as Lohara dynasty came into existence in 1003 A.D.,” Wani said.
In fact, as per the historian, Ghaznavi did not raid Kashmir as far as 1013, while Didda died in 1003, ten years before Ghaznavi invaded.
Wani also said that Didda did not embark on any adventure involving a conflict with any neighboring ruler during her rule.
He added it was during her successor’s rule that Mehmood Ghaznavi invaded Northern India.
Wani described Didda as one of the prominent rulers of Kashmir.
“No doubt she was an able administrator, but the priority of her life was to wield power. This can be gauged by the fact that she ruled not less than 50 years. She was the queen of the ruler Sema Gupta who ruled between 950-958 A.D but behind the throne, the real power was wielded by Didda,” Wani explained.
He said she successfully contained the rebellious elements during her reign.
“She was a great ruler. However, her ambitions even led her to kill her sons to maintain a vice like grip on power,” he said.
