Two army men booked for raping minor in UP’s Hathras

Hathras: A 16-year-old was allegedly gang-raped by two army men in Hathras district when she was returning home after meeting her neighbour.

The incident took place on Friday but was reported to the police on Saturday, news agency IANS reported.

The police have arrested one of the alleged accused Mukesh, who had come to the village on a leave. The other accused, Saurabh, is absconding, it said.

Quoting Superintendent of police (SP) Hathras, Vineet Jaiswal, the report said that Mukesh is posted in Jodhpur as a jawan and Saurabh, a new recruit, has not got his posting yet.

The victim, a student of Class 10, was dragged by the suspects to a vacant plot while she was returning to her home. Mukesh’s house is just 100-meter away from the victim’s house.

The SP said that an FIR has been registered under section 376-D (gang-rape) and under POCSO at Sadabad police station.

Pertinently, on 14 September 2020, a 19-year-old woman was gang-raped in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, India, by four upper-caste men. After fighting for her life for two weeks, she died in a Delhi hospital.

Initially, it was reported that one accused had tried to kill her, though later in her statement to the magistrate, the victim named four accused as having raped her. The victim’s brother claimed that no arrests were made in the first 10 days after the incident took place. After her death, the victim was forcibly cremated by the police without the consent of her family, a claim denied by the police.

The case and its subsequent handling has received widespread media attention and condemnation from across the country, and was the subject of protests against the Yogi Adityanath government.
