287 cases registered under UAPA in JK in 2020: NCRB

Srinagar: As many as 287 cases were registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in Jammu and Kashmir in 2020.

The data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), shows that JK topped the chart in terms of cases registered under the UA(P) Act last year with the Union Territory alone accounting for 36% of the total cases registered.

The data reveals that out of 796 cases registered under the stringent law in different states and Union Territories, 287 were alone registered in different police stations of JK in 2020.

Jammu and Kashmir is followed by Manipur where 196 cases were registered.

According to data, 86 cases were registered under UA (P) Act in Jharkhand, 76 in Assam, 72 in Uttar Pradesh, 30 in Bihar, 19 in Punjab, 18 in Kerala, 10 in Meghalya, six in Delhi, four in Madhya Pradesh, three each in Arunachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, two each in Haryana, Nagaland and Tripura and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.

The data, which was released by NCRB on September 14, shows that no case has been registered under the UA (P) Act in nine states and six UTs.

The UAPA was originally enacted in 1967 to deal with activities directed against the sovereignty and integrity of India. It was amended in 2004 to deal with militancy-related activities.
