Expo Mart of international standard in Kashmir ‘need of the hour’: Chairman CEPC

Srinagar: Chairman of the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) and Wool and Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC), Dr Romesh Khajuria, under the Ministry of Textiles, concluded a visit to Srinagar from April 20 to 22, 2024.

During the visit, Dr Khajuria emphasized Srinagar’s pivotal role in the global handicrafts market, highlighting its rich cultural heritage and skilled artisans.

He proposed the establishment of a permanent Expo Mart to further elevate the region’s handicraft industry, drawing inspiration from successful models like Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi.

Dr Khajuria commended artisans behind the world’s largest hand-knotted silk carpet, measuring 72X40 ft, crafted in Wailoo Kunzer village of Tangmarg, north Kashmir.

This remarkable feat, achieved over eight years, showcases the artisans’ talent and offers employment prospects.

Acknowledging the artisans’ dedication, Dr. Khajuria congratulated Mohammad Ashraf Parray, Firdous Ahmad Dar, and Mohammad Maqbool Parray for their exceptional craftsmanship despite COVID challenges.

Additionally, Dr. Khajuria visited M/S Carpets Creativity of Art in Idgah, Srinagar, witnessing innovative Silk Pashmina Carpets being crafted.

Looking ahead, Dr. Khajuria assured his commitment to the responsibilities bestowed upon him by the Office of DC Handicrafts, Government of India, for the CEPC’s 2024 elections, seeking industry support for conducting fair and transparent elections.

In closing, Dr. Khajuria extended heartfelt best wishes to all stakeholders of the JK Carpet industry, urging collective efforts to propel the Handmade Carpet Industry towards greater heights of success and prosperity.
