Delhi Govt announces Rs 10 lakh aid for gang-rape survivor

New Delhi: The Chief of New Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has ordered a Rs 10 lakh settlement for a woman who was kidnapped, allegedly gang-raped by her neighbours, and paraded through the streets in Shahdara district last week.

The victim was ruthlessly attacked by her neighbours including men and women who even chopped off her hair and forced her to wear a garland of shoes.

However, police later detained a man, eight women, and three small boys — all from the same family — in connection with the case.

According to Kejriwal, the case will be expedited in court. He expressed his displeasure on Twitter, writing, “I have ordered compensation of Rs 10 lakh for this daughter. Delhi government will make all efforts to get her justice. We are appointing a good lawyer for her case. We will also fast track the matter so that she gets justice as soon as possible.”

The problem was brought to light after a video of the 20-year-old being smacked and paraded through the streets leaked on Thursday. Despite the fact that neighbours and town residents were clapping, no one came forward to intervene.

Besides Kejriwal, East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir, and Swati Maliwal, the chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, have also assured help to the victim’s family.
