Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has said that his country could have responded to India after its missile landed in Pakistan’s Punjab province but it observed restraint.

On March 9, an Indian supersonic missile entered Pakistani territory, endangering several airliners during the course of its flight before hitting a private property in Mian Channu, some 275-km from Lahore.

Regarding the incident, Khan said, “We could have responded after an Indian missile fell in Mian Channu but we observed restraint.”

He was addressing a public rally in Punjab’s Hafizabad district on Sunday afternoon.

On March 9, 2022, Pakistan claimed it destroyed a missile launched from India in Mian Channu in the Punjab province of the country.

The unarmed supersonic missile launched from the Indian side travelled 124 km into Pakistani airspace and fell at Mian Channu in Punjab province at 6:50 pm PST.

According to DGISPR, a high-speed flying object was picked up by the Air Defence System of Pakistan. It landed in Mian Channu and damaged some civilians’ property. No human causality was reported.

The supersonic Indian projectile shot by Pakistan Air Force in Mian Channu appears to be a variant of Indo-Russo BrahMos Cruise Missile having 290 KM range and 2.8 Mach speed stocked by Indian Air Force at a base in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan.

However, the Defence Ministry of India called it a “technical malfunction” that was “deeply regrettable”.

It said, “On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry.”

“It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident,” it added.
