New Delhi: The Government of India has terminated the services of three officers responsible for BrahMos missile-firing incident on 9 March 2022 fired into Pakistan which the IAF said was a misfire.
The Indian Air Force said their services have been terminated by the government with immediate effect and the termination orders have been served upon the officers on Tuesday. A Group Captain and two Wing Commanders were terminated from their services.
The development comes months after a BrahMos missile was accidentally fired into Pakistan on March 9, 2022. A Court of Inquiry (Col), set up to establish the facts of the case, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile.
“A BrahMos missile was accidentally fired on 09 March 2022. A Court of Inquiry (Col), set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile,” the Air Force said in a statement.
After the missile was fired accidentally from the Indian side into an area in Pakistan, the defence ministry of India said, calling it “deeply regrettable” and blamed “technical malfunction”.
Earlier, the defence ministry in a statement said that the government of India has taken a serious view of the incident and ordered a ‘Court of Enquiry’ into it after Pakistan said a high-speed projectile launched from India entered its airspace and fell near Mian Channu in Khanewal district.
“On March 9, in the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry,” the defence ministry statement said.
Describing the incident, Pakistan said the missile flew more than 100 km inside their airspace, at an altitude of 40,000 feet and at three times the speed of sound, before it landed. However, there was no warhead on the missile, so it did not detonate.
