Bear, cub tranquilized day after injuring man in Srinagar

Srinagar: In a big relief to the residents of uptown Srinagar, a Bear and a cub have been captured by a team of the wildlife department here on Monday. The wild bear had created fear and authorities now say all schools can function normally.

“After 21 hours nonstop operation, Black Bear spotted yesterday in Rajbagh area has been tranquillized. Great job by the Team led by Wildlife Department, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Aijaz Asad said in a tweet”, adding, “Area has been scanned and sanitized. All Educational institutions in the area shall open normally as per daily routine”.

The Bear injured a chokidar of a private school at Lal Mandi on Sunday. It has not been revealed so far by the authorities as to how the Bear and the cub reached the densely populated area of Srinagar.

On Sunday, panic gripped Rajbagh area of Srinagar after a bear and its cub were seen roaming in the area late last night, even as the wildlife department and police had advised the residents to stay indoors till the bear is caught.

Earlier, Wildlife Warden Altaf Hussain said that he received a call on Sunday that a bear and its cub have been seen roaming in the area.

He said that a team launched a search operation and probable areas were being searched so that the bear is caught.

Srinagar police also issued an advisory asking people to stay indoors after CCTV footage surfaced, wherein a bear and its cub can be seen roaming in the Rajbagh area.

“One Wild Bear & a small Cub are roaming in Rajbagh locality of Srinagar. Wildlife officials & Police are on the job. Citizens of this & nearby areas are advised to remain indoors till it is caught. If anyone notices/sees the bear, pls inform at SHO Rajbagh’s number 7006572050,” police tweeted on Sunday.
