Srinagar: Three prominent Kashmiri clerics were arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday and shifted to Jammu jail, the families of the said clerics confirmed to Free Press Kashmir.

The clerics include Moulana Abdul Rasheed Dawoodi, Moulana Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri, and Abdul Majeed Dar Almadni.

Dawoodi’s close aid Fayaz Ahmed Rizvi confirmed that he accompanied Tehreek-e-Sowtul Auliya head to the police station where Rizvi was told to leave and Dawoodi was detained. Dawoodi who originally hails from Kulgam and delivers Friday prayers in Kabamarg, Anantnag, is also the founder of a seminary in Anantnag.

The family of the Moulana Veeri, who was booked under the Public Safety Act in 2019, while confirming his arrest said that they too received the call from police officials asking them to report at the police station.

However, it was not immediately confirmed under which charges the clerics were arrested. Families say that they were not informed about the charges against them by the officials.

One report by news agency PTI while quoting officials said that authorities are contemplating booking the clerics under the Public Safety Act and shifting them to a Jammu jail. The PSA allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.
