New Delhi: Jailed Hurriyat leader Altaf Ahmad Shah passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi early on Tuesday morning.

Shah’s death was confirmed by his daughter, Ruwa Shah, as she tweeted, “Abu (father) breathed his last at AIIMS, New Delhi. As a prisoner”.

The leader was not keeping well for a long time and his family had requested the jail authorities for medical attention. The requests were also sent to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah as the deceased leader’s daughter wrote a letter to them seeking immediate medical attention. However, no bail was granted to Shah despite his worsening health issues.

Shah, a resident of Srinagar, was diagnosed with renal cancer that spread to other parts of his body, and was shifted to Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital which had no oncology department, the letter mentioned that Ruwa Shah also shared on Twitter.

The Delhi High Court had on October 1 ordered that Shah be shifted to AIIMS in Delhi, but he was moved to the hospital only some days ago. The court had also directed that his son or daughter be allowed to meet him for an hour every day.
