Politician shot dead in Punjab, accused arrested

Amritsar: A politician Sudhir Suri was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while he was sitting on a dharna outside a temple in Punjab’s Amritsar on Friday.

As per reports, the accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime has been seized.

The incident took place outside Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road where Suri and some other leaders of the party were holding a protest.

The assailant fired more than five shots at Suri. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they said.

Suri was in the news after being arrested on charges of using offensive language against a particular community and provoking religious sentiments in July this year.

He had posted a video on social media where he, along with some of his associates, can be heard saying objectionable words against the community.

According to police, more than five shots were fired at Suri after which he fell down and lost consciousness. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to bullet injuries, they said. The accused

Suri was on the hit list of several gangsters for a long time and was provided security by the government with around eight Punjab Police personnel being attached to him, they said.

The incident took place months after singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in broad daylight in Punjab’s Mansa district.
