VDC member opens fire in Rajouri causing panic in locality

A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member opened fire, causing panic to envelop a community in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. According to reports by NDTV, the VDC member may have fired in panic, prompting the armed forces to hurry to Muradpur village.

Following recent killings in Rajouri, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, the vigilante organisations have been reorganised and given firearms.

Rifles have been distributed to more than 5,000 VDC members, and more are waiting in Rajouri district to purchase weapons. The region around Jammu has about 28,000 VDCs.

According to sources, the VDC member’s shooting at Muradpur appears to be a case of security anxiety. According to them, the VDC shooter started shooting this evening when a woman in his home noticed some unusual activity.

Gun mishandling and abuse continue to be a major worry because the villagers were given the firearms in the absence of any restrictions or control mechanisms. In various districts, there are more than 200 FIRs filed against VDC members. These involve drug use, rioting, rape, and murder.
