Fruit growers in Kashmir are deeply concerned about the impact of recent erratic weather conditions on their orchards and livelihoods. With approximately 60% of the population directly dependent on the horticulture sector, growers fear that the current weather patterns could trigger diseases and affect the quality of their fruit.

Muhammad Yousuf from Shopian highlighted the risk posed by the erratic weather, expressing worries about potential diseases in orchards and the adverse effect on fruit quality. Similar sentiments were echoed by Sameer Ahmad, who recalled last year’s low fruit set and subsequent losses due to similar weather conditions.

The challenges faced by growers extend beyond erratic weather, with various factors like hailstorms, road issues, and changing demand patterns impacting the sector annually. Bashir Ahmad Basheer, Chairman of Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers and Dealers Union, emphasised the need for a comprehensive crop insurance scheme to mitigate the recurring losses faced by farmers.

Meanwhile, persistent rainfall in the region is disrupting critical spray schedules for apple growers. Mohammad Akbar Bhat from Sopore highlighted the difficulties faced in adhering to pesticide and fertiliser spraying due to the unpredictable weather, which could lead to fungal infections and pest infestations on orchards.

The disruption in spray schedules is occurring at a crucial time during the flowering and fruit-setting stages, potentially affecting the yield and quality of the upcoming apple season. Concerns have been raised about missed sprays and the impact of increased pesticide concentrations in water bodies due to runoff.

The growers have sought measures such as crop insurance and improved infrastructure to safeguard against the challenges posed by climate variability and ensure the sustainability of Kashmir’s vital horticulture sector.
