‘Catastrophic and barbaric:’ British actress Juliet Stevenson condemns genocide in Gaza

Renowned actress Juliet Stevenson gave a moving reading of the last poem by Palestinian writer Refaat Alareer, who was killed by Israel in Gaza in December, 2023.

Renowned British actress Juliet Stevenson expressed her dismay over genocide in Gaza and described the ongoing strikes since then as “catastrophic and barbaric.”

Stevenson, known for her roles in films like “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and “Bend It Like Beckham,” voiced her solidarity with the people of Palestine in Gaza.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency before the recent National March for Palestine in London, she emphasised the dire situation faced by everyone in the region, particularly in Gaza.

“The people of Gaza are enduring unimaginable suffering,” Stevenson remarked, highlighting her participation in the London rally advocating for a cease-fire because she felt compelled not to remain passive.

Amid widespread global rallies calling for an end to arms supply to Israel and an immediate, lasting cease-fire in Gaza, Stevenson emphasized the devastating impact of the conflict on both Palestinians and Israelis. She emphasized that perpetuating this “terrible war” would only breed fear, hatred, and anger for generations to come.

Stevenson criticized the conflict as being driven by a select few in power, whose interests she believes do not align with those of ordinary people. She called for solidarity among all communities, including the Jewish community, noting that many Jewish individuals have joined the pro-Palestine marches across the UK.

The ongoing conflict has led to devastating consequences, including internal displacement for 85% of Gaza’s population and severe shortages of essential resources like food, water, and medicine.

The International Court of Justice has received accusations of genocide against Israel, with an interim ruling in January urging measures to prevent acts of genocide and ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza.
