Five arrested, 4 detained in connection with stone pelting during demolition drive in Jammu

Protest over demolition drive on February 4, 2023 in Jammu's Malik Market.

Jammu: Two days after protest and stone pelting was reported in Jammu during a demolition drive, five people have been arrested and four detained, police said on Monday.

Three policemen were injured in the stone-throwing incident that took place on Saturday during the drive to demolish a vehicle showroom built allegedly on encroached land in Malik Market in Narwal bypass area.

The owner of the showroom, Sajad Ahmed Beigh, is among those arrested, PTI reported quoting police.

“We have arrested five people and detained four others in connection with stone-throwing that took place during an anti-encroachment drive here,” a senior police officer told the news agency.

Protests broke out at multiple places in JK on Saturday as Lieutenant Governor Manoh Sinha led administration stepped up the drive to evict people from “State land” and ordered the police “to maintain strict vigil on law and order situation and those people commenting negatively against the move”.

Pertinently, the demolition drive in Jammu and Kashmir is going on for the past many weeks as the administration has ordered the seizure of “state land” and removal of structures built on it.
