Water shortage, poor drainage, dilapidated roads trigger protest in Sopore

Protest over lack of basic facilities in Sopore.

Sopore: Inhabitants of Maharajpora area of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Tuesday held a protest demonstration over lack of basic facilities in their locality.

Scores of men and women gathered in front of Police Station Sopore and blocked the Sopore-Bandipora road for hours. However, traffic was later restored after police intervention.

Talking to the news agency Kashmir News Observer, the protesters said that there is shortage of drinking water, poor drainage facility and dilapidated roads in the area.

“The area has been overlooked by the consecutive governments and nobody seems to be taking our issues seriously,” they said.

They alleged they have been victimized and befooled by so-called leaders who only visited them during elections.

Meanwhile, the residents urged the LG administration and the concerned authorities to look into their genuine demands so they could heave a sigh of relief.
