Fire guts Darul Uloom in north Kashmir

Darul Uloom gutted in fire incident in north Kashmir's Lolab area.

Kupwara: A building of Darul Uloom (Islamic seminary) was damaged due to fire at Chandigam Lolab in this north Kashmir’s district on Saturday.

The fire erupted in residential quarters of the seminary, Darul Uloom ‘Khair U Darsain’, around 7 am this morning and engulfed the building.

Although the fire was doused off within a reasonable dispatch, sources said, but it damaged the building to a large extent. The fire caused damage to books and literature kept in the building even as there was no loss of life or injury reported, they added.

A police officer said that fire controlling measures were taken up immediately after receiving information about the fire. He said that the cause of fire is being investigated even as preliminary investigations suggest it to be due to short circuit.

The tragic fire mishap sent shockwaves among the local populace, who were seen crying and wailing at the incident site. Many scholars also reached the site and expressed solidarity with the seminary management over the tragic incident.

The scholars unanimously termed the incident a setback to the Ummah in general and to the people of Kupwara and Lolab in particular.

“This is one of the prominent seminaries in the district which has been dispensing its services since 1997”, said a scholar adding “Losing the property, especially the literature-rich library with over 3500 books, is quite a setback to us all.”

A general appeal was made on the occasion to send contributions, if any, at Account number 0138010100000628 (Darul Uloom Kharudarin Chandigam, Sogam Lolab/IFSC Code JAKA0SOGAAM). Enquiry, if any, may be sought directly from seminary head Maulana Mohammad Shafi Makki at 6005424474. (GNS)
