Imphal: In a new incident of the state’s ongoing violence, the official residence of Manipur’s sole female minister was set on fire on Wednesday.

It was late this evening that the residence of Industry Minister Nemcha Kipgen in the Lamphel neighbourhood of Imphal West district was attacked.

Kipgen was not at home at the time, NDTV reported quoting officials.

The report said forces personnel led by senior officials have rushed to the spot and launched a search operation.

The only female minister in the 12-member administration led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh is Kipgen, who won a seat in the state assembly last year from the tribally predominate Kangpokpi assembly constituency.

She is one of the seven BJP-affiliated Kuki MLAs and one of the 10 Kuki MLAs who have called for a separate administration.

Pertinently, nine individuals, including a woman, have died in the past 24 hours.

According to army officials, the most of the casualties occurred during a late-night shooting in the Khamenlok region.

The bodies bore cut marks and multiple bullet injuries, reports said. Those injured were taken to Imphal for treatment.
