Police on Friday apprehended members of the Hindu right-wing outfit Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student body affiliated with the RSS, for reportedly assaulting the vice-chancellor and other officials at Deen Dayal Upadhyay University in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

They also assaulted police officers who tried to intervene in efforts to restore order.

The ABVP members had been staging a protest at the university gate, but their anger escalated when the senior university official declined to meet with them in the afternoon.

This led to violence, resulting in injuries to several university officials and students.

The situation escalated further as angry ABVP members forcibly entered the vice-chancellor’s office, causing extensive damage and attacking him.

Upon being alerted, the police rushed to the scene, but the ABVP members also turned violent against the officers. To disperse the crowd, the police used force and subsequently arrested multiple ABVP members.
