Impal: In a recent incident in the violence-affected state of Manipur, a mob carried out a daring attack by breaking into a police armoury. The attackers managed to steal a considerable number of weapons, including AK and ‘Ghatak’ series assault rifles, along with more than 19,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibres.
The state has been grappling with unrest since May 3 due to ongoing ethnic clashes between two groups. The incident of looting occurred at the 2nd India Reserve Battalion (IRB) headquarters situated in Naranseina, Bishnupur district. This development raises serious concerns about the security situation in the region.
PTI reported that the incident happened at the battalion headquarters of the 2nd India Reserve Battalion (IRB), located at Naranseina, in the Bishnupur district.
As per reports, the armoury loot incident is not the first or standalone. Since the current series of violence and riots between the Kuki and Meitei communities began in the state, multiple police armouries have been looted across the state.
A violent mob looted more than 4000 weapons and a large number of bullets. Only 1600 weapons have been recovered so far.
The mob, consisting of armed miscreants in vehicles and on foot, overpowered guards at the IRB armoury and broke into it.
The police attempted to stop the mob using over 327 rounds of ammunition and tear gas, but they were unsuccessful.
Additionally, about 12 km away from the armoury, another group clashed with the Rapid Action Force during a mass burial of over 35 Kuki-Zo persons, resulting in the hurling of bricks and wooden logs at the RAF personnel.
