Athletes, singers across globe seek end to Gaza killings, advocate for protection of lives

Amidst the ongoing bombardment on Palestine by Israel killing over 5,000 people, global sports icons have and stepped forward to express their solidarity with the victims of the relentless violence in Gaza.

As the death toll rises and destruction escalates, renowned athletes worldwide have taken to social media to condemn the Israeli aggression and advocate for the protection of innocent lives.

The conflict, now in its 18th day, has seen a devastating toll on the Palestinian population. With thousands of civilian casualties, countless injuries, and mass displacement, the situation has drawn widespread international attention. The plight of the Palestinian people has prompted a surge of public outcry and activism, with citizens worldwide participating in marches and protests to call for an immediate ceasefire.

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, prominent figures in the world of sports have utilized their platforms to advocate for peace and denounce the atrocities being inflicted upon the people of Gaza.

Notable football stars, including French player Karim Benzema, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, and Algerian professional Riyad Mahrez, have all taken a stand, using their social media presence to amplify the voices of the oppressed.

Karim Benzema’s heartfelt post on X (formerly known as Twitter) resonated with over 618,000 likes, 200,000 reposts, and nearly 50 million views, garnering widespread support for Gaza’s residents amidst the ongoing airstrikes.

Mohamed Salah, in a video shared across his social media channels, emphasized the urgency of humanitarian aid reaching the besieged Gaza Strip, calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing massacres and the protection of innocent families.

Solidarity gestures extended beyond the realm of football, with athletes from various sports backgrounds rallying behind the Palestinian cause.

Egyptian swimmer Abdelrahman Sameh, after securing a gold medal at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2023, refused to celebrate as a sign of his support for the Palestinians. Despite facing backlash and even death threats, Sameh remained resolute in his stance, highlighting the risks associated with speaking out in such volatile times.

Across continents, athletes such as Moroccan player Nassir Mazraoui, German star Mesut Ozil, and French football legend Franck Ribery, joined the chorus of voices advocating for peace and freedom for Palestine.

Their social media posts, adorned with symbols of solidarity, including the Palestinian flag and images of the war-torn region, served as poignant reminders of the human cost of conflict.

Furthermore, the courage displayed by athletes like Jordanian player Musa al-Taamari, New Zealander rugby star Sonny Bill Williams, and American basketball legend Ray Allen in speaking out against the misrepresentation of events in the media demonstrated the global scale of support for the Palestinian cause.

Their public statements served as calls to action, urging the world to confront the harsh realities faced by the people of Gaza and demand an immediate end to the violence.

Meanhwile, Lebanese pop sensation Elissa, known for her unwavering support for Palestine, recently took to social media to express solidarity with the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

Likening several posts on X that highlighted the plight of the Palestinian people, Elissa later shared a tweet adorned with the Palestinian flag and a poignant quote urging others to speak out against injustice.

Alongside Elissa, a host of other prominent Arab singers, including Carole Samaha, Laila Ghofran, Nawal al-Zoghbi, and renowned actors such as Karim Abedal Aziz and Ahmed Helmy, have also utilised their social media presence to voice their support for the Palestinian cause.

American singer-songwriter Kehlani added her voice to the chorus of solidarity, calling for freedom and justice for Palestine in the face of ongoing Israeli aggression.

Earlier this month, Palestinian-Americans and pro-Palestine advocates staged a protest in downtown Chicago, Illinois, demanding that the US government reconsider its alliance with Israel.

They called upon the international community to break its “silence” on the Palestinian issue, emphasizing the need for US citizens to vocalize their support.

Notably, Chicago and its surrounding areas are home to one of the largest Palestinian diasporas in the United States.
