At an event in Madrid commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Ione Belarra, the General Secretary of Spain’s Podemos party, strongly condemned the international community’s silence regarding what she described as Israel’s ongoing attempt to exterminate the Palestinian population.
Belarra criticised Europe for not applying social, political, economic, diplomatic, and legal pressure on Israel, asserting that such a Europe loses the moral authority to lecture on human rights.
She rejected Israel’s “colonial” policy towards the Palestinians and questioned why Israel continues its alleged genocide against Palestine without facing consequences. Belarra emphasised that this systematic “genocide” predates October 7 and called for its immediate cessation.
Belarra urged European governments to act justly, advocating for sanctions on Israel similar to those imposed on Russia for its actions in Ukraine.
She warned against European complicity in what she termed a “genocide” and accused major media outlets of dehumanising Palestinians in their coverage.
Citing Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, Belarra claimed that over 15,000 people, including 6,150 children and 4,000 women, have been killed according to Gaza health authorities.
