New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), criticised the suspension of 141 Opposition MPs during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament by the Narendra Modi government.

At the annual CPP meeting in New Delhi, she denounced the government’s decision, stating that democracy has been undermined. She highlighted that never before have so many Opposition MPs been suspended from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, especially for making a reasonable and legitimate demand.

Expressing her support for the Opposition MPs’ call for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliamentary security breach on December 13, Sonia Gandhi emphasised that the only request was for a statement addressing the extraordinary events.

She characterised the government’s response as “arrogant” and went on to say that there are no words to describe the disdainful treatment of this request. Regarding Modi’s delayed response on December 13th, she noted that it took four days for him to address the nation outside of Parliament, indicating a lack of respect for the dignity of the Lok Sabha and the people of the country.
