Akbarnagar: a blatant disregard for the judiciary, the Lucknow Development Authority recently proceeded to demolish numerous houses labeled as ‘illegal encroachments’ in Akbarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, causing distress among its 15,000 residents.

Despite a December 21 order from the Allahabad High Court, which temporarily halted the demolition until January 22, 2024, the Lucknow civic body, the NewsClick reported, went ahead with the demolition the next day.

Shockingly, this action was taken against the court’s directive, and approximately 2,500 houses, predominantly inhabited by the Muslim community, were destroyed.

Tearful residents claimed that the poor were being unfairly targeted, expressing their frustration with a government that, in their view, despises the impoverished, Siasat.com reported.

As the eviction unfolded, residents protested, leading to the detention of some by the police.

One resident, emotionally distressed, shared that they had lived in the area for three to four decades emphasiszed the lack of alternative housing or compensation.

Despite the adversity, residents vowed to resist, declaring they would rather face the consequences than abandon their homes.
