Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating the citizenship issue for political advantage.

Speaking to party workers in Deganga, she questioned how people in border areas could benefit from state and central development schemes if they lacked citizenship.

Banerjee criticized the BJP for exploiting citizenship concerns for political gain and claimed that the party aimed to divide people along religious lines.

She emphasized opposition to discriminatory practices and highlighted her government’s initiative to grant land rights to those who arrived from Bangladesh in 1971 and later.

These remarks come in response t Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statements affirming the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, a law opposed by Banerjee’s TMC party.

The CAA, passed in 2019, aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries who entered before December 31, 2014.
